During the third trimester of my last pregnancy, I went crazy crocheting all sorts of baby booties and hats, plus a blanket and several pairs of slippers for everyone nearby.  

Nesting, I guess?

We had temporarily moved in with my in-laws while we were waiting for our house to sell out of state.  

Being a hugely pregnant introvert, I spent a lot of time hiding in the basement with my yarn stash!

I came up with this baby bean hat one day when I was crocheting away.  I wanted to make something simple but with a little bit of detail.  

I’m always a fan of a quick win project, and that’s what this crochet pattern is!

Yarn Suggestions

I used worsted weight acrylic yarn for this, specifically Knit Picks Brava which is one of my favorites.  

You could use any worsted weight yarn that’s nice and soft.  

I don’t recommend cotton because it doesn’t have enough stretch.

Yarn & Notions

• 1 skein of worsted weight yarn 
  • I recommend Knit Picks Brava
• 4.25 mm crochet hook
• Large eye needle for finishing

This adorable baby bean crochet hat is perfect for your newborn or if you need a quick gift for someone who’s expecting!

It has two rows of bean stitches for a simply embellished style that’s perfect for every baby.

Size: Newborn

Special Stitches in this Pattern

~Bean stitch~

• Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). 
• Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull up loop (4 loops on hook). 
• Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (6 loops on hook). 
• Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. 
• Chain 1 to complete the stitch.

Pattern:

Note: Turning chains do NOT count as a stitch.

Row 1.  Make a magic loop, ch 2. 11 dc in loop, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 2. (11 sts)

Row 2.  Make 2 dc in each st, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 2. (22 sts)

Row 3.  *Make 2 dc in 1st st, dc in next st* Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 2. (33 sts)

Row 4.  *Make 2 dc in 1st st, dc in next 2 sts* Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 2. (44 sts)

Rows 5 – 6.  Dc in each st around, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 2.

Row 7.  Dc in each st around, sl st to 1st dc to join, ch 1.

-Now you’ll start working in spirals instead of joining to 1st stitch-

Rows 8 – 9. Sc in each st around, when you get to the last stitch, DON’T join, instead place a stitch marker and sc in first stitch from previous row and in each stitch around for row 9.

-Now start the bean stitches-

Rows 10 – 11. Make a bean stitch in the first sc of row, *skip next sc, bean stitch in next* repeat around.

When you get to the beginning of the row, continue to bean stitch in the space between the previous row of bean stitches until you get to the second to the last stitch of row 11.

In last stitch sc, then sl st to top of first bean stitch from beginning of the row. Ch 1.

Row 12. Sc in each bean stitch and each space between bean stitches around. Sl st to join. Finish off.

Abbreviation Key

• Ch = chain
• Sc = single crochet
• Dc = double crochet
• Sl st = slip stitch

Photo Tutorials

Rows 8 and 9

I use the long tail left from the magic loop as a stitch marker.

The arrow is pointing at the first single crochet in row 8, and the string hanging out is the stitch marker.

Here I’m doing the last single crochet in row 8, instead of joining to the first crochet just keep crocheting around.

The arrow is pointing at the first single crochet of row 8 which will be the next spot I single crochet in starting row 9.

The arrow on the left is the stitch marker/tail from the magic loop, and the arrow on the right is showing how I flipped the end back over before I started row 9, so it’s a running stitch marker.

Last single crochet of row 9, the first bean stitch will go in the next stitch.

Rows 10 and 11

First bean stitch completed!

Arrow is pointing at the next stitch you’ll do a bean stitch into, notice the skipped stitch in between.

First bean stitch of row 11.

You work into the upside-down triangle-shaped space in between the stitches…

…like this!

Here I’ve done the last bean stitch of row 11, now it’s time to finish the round. You’ll single crochet into the space marked with the arrow…

…and then slip stitch into the top of the first bean stitch of the round.

Here it is with the slip stitch completed.

Row 12

Single crocheting into the same stitch as chain 1, then in space, then in top of next bean stitch, keep single crocheting into the spaces and tops of the bean stitches all the way around.

Join to first single crochet with a slip stitch. Done!
