This isn’t a total beginner project, but it’s not as tricky as it looks either.
I’d rate it advanced beginner/intermediate, so if you’re comfortable with the basics and want to challenge yourself just a little, this is a great pattern to try.
Once you get into the rhythm, the vines almost seem to grow right off your hook.

Best Yarn for this Crochet Beanie
For this pattern, you’ll need a soft worsted weight yarn.
I made my Bobble Vine Beanie with Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted, which is a great choice because it’s durable, affordable, and comes in tons of colors.
Here are the approx. yarn amounts for each hat, in grams. (If you crochet tighter or looser, it might be a little different.)
- Newborn – 45 grams
- Toddler – 77 grams
- Child – 112 grams
- Adult Small – 125 grams
- Adult Large – 132 grams
For the adult sizes and child size, you’ll need to pick up 2 skeins if you’re using Premier Anti Pilling Worsted like I did, because they’re 100 grams each. But you’ll be able to get away with 1 skein for the toddler and newborn size.
Other yarns that would work beautifully for this hat include Lion Brand Heartland, Red Heart Soft, or Caron Simply Soft.
You can stick with a solid color to really let the bobble vine texture shine, or try a variegated yarn for a more playful effect.
Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s a worsted weight yarn you enjoy working with. It makes the process much more fun!

Down below is the written pattern and the video tutorial to walk you through.

Special Stitches
Bobble: [Yarn over, insert hook in st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 5 times in same st, yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
B. bobble (Baby Bobble – only used for newborn size): [Yarn over, insert hook in st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 4 times in the same st, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on hook.
Notes
Beginning with Row 2, work all hdc stitches in the 3rd loop only, unless otherwise specified.
When working into a bobble, place the hdc into the top of the bobble as normal (not in the 3rd loop).
For the Newborn size, the pattern uses a baby bobble (b. bobble) instead of the regular bobble stitch. This creates a smaller, lighter texture that’s more proportionate for a tiny hat.

Joining the sides
Fold the hat in half with the wrong side facing out and the short edges aligned. Hold the hat so your hook is on the right edge.
Insert hook through both loops of the front edge (closest to you) and through the BLO of the back edge, yarn over and pull through both layers, then pull through loop on hook to complete a sl st.
Sl st in this way across the next 9, (15, 18, 22) sts (brim section). For the remaining sts, sl st through both loops of both edges.
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail approx. 12″ (30 cm) long.
Cinching up the top
Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Work a running stitch through the end of each row around the top opening of the hat.
When you reach the starting point, pull the yarn firmly to cinch the opening closed. Tie a secure knot and weave in ends.
Pom-Pom (Optional)
If you want to add a pom pom, you can do that now.
I have 2 different tutorial videos for pom poms! Check them out below:
